I Always Get Travel Insurance
I never go overseas without travel insurance. NEVER. It is absolutely essential that I get coverage before I head out. Here’s why:
If your trip gets cancelled for some reason, they’ll cover you. So, get the insurance right after you purchase your tickets. You get sick or injured in a foreign country. Travel insurance will cover you. Your gear gets stolen. Passport, camera equipment, luggage, etc. You’ll be covered. You need to be medically evacuated from a foreign country. They’ll cover you!
This is my favorite travel insurance provider. I think they have the best coverage for cancellations, medical, lost or stolen, and much more.
Okay, now here’s the caveat to travel insurance. With lost or stolen coverage only up to $3,000 USD, my camera equipment wouldn’t even come close to getting replaced if it were stolen. I combat this in two ways:
Molly’s travel insurance will double the replacement pay out, if all our gear gets stolen. After all, 50% of it is legally hers and we actually do have separate equipment, even though the bulk of it travels in the same bag. However, this still doesn’t quite cover all our equipment.
I also carry camera insurance through PPA. This allows me the peace of mind to feel “fully protected” when traveling abroad. My camera equipment means everything to me and it’s just too expensive to risk getting stolen. As much as I love Southeast Asia and especially India, many parts have seen severe poverty in the last 100 years and theft can definitely happen. Knock on wood.
